The Church of the Ascension

Anglican Parish of Morningside

Serving the Local Community for over 90 Years

About Us

Being a Christian is a continual striving to be a Christian. Saint Paul tells us of this task, “Until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ”.

To be like Christ is a fairly demanding way of life. So at Morningside, we are community of beginners, students, and learners about who Our Lord is. Each of us strive to have His Life my life. However, with the grace of Holy Spirit we strive together, as a community, to learn the journey of this faith, and live by it.

We have to take seriously Our Lord’s command, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’

Do we succeed? Not all the time. If we are honest we can make a real mess of things. The original language of the New Testament calls sin, “Missing the mark.” That is what it means to be human. We need help, we need a Saviour.

Yes, we are a work in progress. We do fail, but we pick ourselves up and start again. Nonetheless, we are aided by belonging to His Church. Within His Church, He provides the tools of love for our journey: the Holy Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, the 2000 year heritage of worship and the teaching of the Church, the example and prayers of the Saints, and our personal prayer life. All of this is combined in the celebration of our Sunday Mass, and we cannot live without it. Here, we are a community that is learning the various aspects of love: of Our Lord, His love for us, and also accepting love from our neighbour, until we can love ourselves in Him, our Saviour.
